Why we do what we do at Honest + Goodness Nutrition

Like a lot of families in Ireland, mine has a long history of high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart conditions and diabetes. Having had borderline cholesterol and blood pressure myself in my 30s, I decided to take a nutrition first approach to my health. Ultimately leading to me becoming a qualified and insured nutritional therapist with over 200 hours of client facing experience before I even graduated.

I opened Honest + Goodness Nutrition to focus on heart health and specialise in providing tailor-made eating plans and lifestyle supports.

This is a bespoke approach and no two clients will receive the same programme. I will work with you to create a heart healthy eating plan that allows you to enjoy food and make sustainable changes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heart Disease

    What Is Cardiovascular (heart) disease?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD)includes all diseases of the heart and circulation but most commonly it refers to coronary heart disease (angina, heart attack), stroke and other blood vessel diseases. Blood pressure, cholesterol and high levels of circulating triglycerides (tg) are important markers of heart health.

    What is blood pressure?

When your heart beats, it pumps blood round your body to give it the energy and oxygen it needs. As the blood moves, it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The strength of this pushing is your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your arteries (and your heart) and this may lead to heart attacks and strokes.

How did I get High blood pressure / hypertension?

A number of factors combine to raise blood pressure, and high blood pressure can run in families. A nutrition first approach to high blood pressure is recommended by doctors world wide, and a healthy diet can support medical intervention.

Can what I eat really impact my heart health?

From the DASH diet to the Mediterranean diet, there are many suggested approaches to heart healthy eating. They all have one thing in common - increasing your fruit and vegetable intake. This along with reducing salt, balancing your blood sugars, specific nutritional supports and other healthy eating habits can reduce blood pressure. The natural consequences of a healthy diet can also include weight loss, increased energy, and a love of good honest food!

Changing habits can be difficult and for many, these new foods and ways of cooking can seem daunting. At honest + goodness nutrition, we will provide you with a tailor-made food plan, support, recipes and tips to keep you on track for the long term.

    Why Do I Have Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is needed by the body at healthy levels for various functions including nerve signal transmissions, vitamin D formation, creating bile for healthy digestion and in the creation of hormones including sex hormones and stress hormones like cortisol.

When it is out of balance, it can stick to the walls of the arteries, this build up can form plaques and making it difficult for blood to flow. This can cause blockages leading to heart attacks and strokes. By supporting your body's natural function with diet and lifestyle changes, it is possible to bring cholesterol back to healthy levels.
